Y Fleet 1 Starting Big in 2023
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I couldn’t get the Woody Orrell Season trophy to the January meeting for
presentation. So, at our February meeting we were able to present our ex-commodore, Winky Williams, with the 2022
Season trophy for Fleet #1. Fleet Captain Shelby (Hatcher) Gosnell presented the trophy. (Pictured below)
The February meeting is our traditional “We love our Y” Valentine meeting hosted by Amy Kuznicki and Amanda Hodges.
As usual, if Amy is involved, there were games. We played ‘Finish the Valentine phrase’ and ‘Valentine Pictionary’ while
sipping red wine and dunking marshmallows and strawberries in the chocolate fountain.
It was great to have Heather’s sister, Meredith Hall, join us again while she is in Georgia.
Our hearts are heavy as we said good-bye on January 28 to long-time Y sailor, Gordon Thompson. He is father to Y
sailors Alan (Brenda) Thompson and Judy (Mike) Ross. He spent over 40 years sailing and supporting Y Flyer sailing.
The MidWinter Regatta will, again, be chaired by the ever-industrious Hatchers. We may not have a big lake or an
offshore breeze, but we know how to host a regatta. As of this writing, with 3 weeks still to go, we have 16 out of town
boats traveling to Acworth, GA March 17-19. And two of those traveling sailors are from Canada. If you don’t have a Y to
sail, do come join us for a special Y regatta experience by contacting Nile about getting some meals and watching first
class racing on Saturday and Sunday.
The weekend after MidWinters will be our AYC Commissioning and the start to our club racing season. Everyone should
be tuned up for the sailing season after MidWinters, so no excuses for not showing up March 26 for the first day of fleet
racing. April will offer fleet racing, the AYC Open and the Hospice Regatta in Nashville. Go to the Y Flyer national website
at yflyer.org to see the racing schedule for 2023. Let’s get some trailer tires pumped up and travel covers shaken out and
plan on some regattas this year. I’m sure you can fit one or two in somewhere.

her favorite candy was Blow Pops?
